Mark was born and raised in Lino Lakes, MN. He attended college in Annapolis, MD at the United States Naval Academy and is a proud alumnus of the class of 2013 (Beat Army!). He performed undergraduate research under Dr. Dianne Luning-Prak and Dr. Paul Trulove developing testing protocols for algae-based biofuel blends. In May 2012, he was recognized with the ACS Undergraduate Award for Analytical Chemistry. Mark graduated with merit, receiving a B.S. in Chemistry and a commission as an active duty officer in the United States Navy. He was stationed for 5 years in Virginia Beach, VA performing work as an Information Professional Officer, reaching the rank of Lieutenant. He resigned his active duty commission in 2018 prior to his arrival at Washington University.
